Log Cabin Contributes $50,000 to Oregon Constitutional Amendment Fight
Battle Against Oregon Anti-family Amendment is an Important Part of Log Cabin's 2004 Election Work
(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans announced that it will contribute $50,000 to the Oregon "No on Constitutional Amendment 36" campaign working to defeat a constitutional amendment that would ban civil marriage for same-sex couples on Oregon's November ballot. "Log Cabin Republicans proudly join this critical fight to defend the Oregon Constitution and protect all Oregon families," said Patrick Guerriero, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. "This amendment would put unequal treatment for gay and lesbian Oregonians into the state constitution and deny thousands of Oregon families critical protections and responsibilities that come with marriage, including the right to make emergency medical decisions, access to health care, or even the right to be buried next to a loved one."
While many states are facing similar amendments this election year, Oregon has emerged as the state most likely to defeat such an amendment. This is due, in part, to Oregon's history of defeating four statewide and more than 30 county and city-wide anti-gay ballot measures over the last sixteen years. In addition, polling in Oregon shows that Oregonians are evenly divided on the amendment and can be persuaded to vote no.
"The support of Log Cabin Republicans is important at this critical moment in the Oregon campaign and demonstrates to Oregonians and the rest of the country that keeping unequal treatment out of our constitution is not a partisan value," said Campaign Manager Aisling Coghlan. "This contribution in the final stretch provides us with critical funds to get our message out to undecided voters about the real effects of this amendment."
For 2004, Log Cabin has dedicated its resources to defending our U.S. Constitution, defending state constitutions, and electing and re-electing fair minded Republicans to the United States House and Senate.
