(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Log Cabin Republicans deplore the introduction of a proposed anti-gay amendment to the United States Constitution. The measure, the Federal Marriage Amendment introduced in the United States House of Representatives, would deny marriage to same-sex couples and restrict states from granting basic fairness to gay and lesbian families. The bi-partisan cosponsors of the Federal Marriage Amendment are: Collin Peterson (D-MN), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Ralph Hall (D-TX), Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), David Vitter (R-LA).

"Americans across our nation are united behind winning the war on terror and jump starting the U.S. economy, while these legislators are spending their energy on dividing America and denying rights to a part of the American family," said Log Cabin Republican executive director Patrick Guerriero. "They need to get their priorities straight."

"These misguided legislators believe that the federal government should deny states the ability to grant basic tax and benefit fairness to our families," Guerriero continued.

"Most fair-minded Americans understand that law-abiding, tax paying, loving gay and lesbian families do not threaten traditional marriage. These legislators and the radical right should focus on the real issues that tear families apart and quit blaming gay and lesbian Americans," concluded Guerriero.
