Bush Advisor Quits Over Log Cabin Flap

Diane Ravitch, the education historian and standards advocate, has resigned as education adviser to the Republican presidential campaign of George W. Bush. Dr. Ravitch, who advised Governor Bush on three education speeches, has told associates that she resigned last month from the campaign in protest after Mr. Bush said he probably would not meet with the Log Cabin Republicans, an organization of gay party members.

Dr. Ravitch was assistant secretary of education under Mr. Bush's father, President George Bush. She declined to comment on her decision.

Mindy Tucker, a spokeswoman for the Bush campaign, said of Dr. Ravitch, "She's been a valued adviser to the campaign, and Governor Bush regrets her position."
