Log Cabin Republicans Condemn Latest Effort to Pass Anti-Family Constitutional Amendment in Massachusetts

Radical Right Seeks to Invalidate Thousands of Marriages and Oppose Creation of Civil Unions

(Washington, DC) – Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has announced his support for an anti-family constitutional amendment in Massachusetts that would both invalidate thousands of marriages and fails to establish civil unions as an alternative. Governor Romney's support comes as far right forces are attempting to have the anti-family amendment put on the 2008 ballot. "Governor Romney's position on this anti-family amendment it is at odds with the overwhelming majority of Massachusetts voters" said Ken Sanchez, President of Log Cabin's Massachusetts chapter.

Public opinion polls in Massachusetts show overwhelming support for civil marriage equality. In fact, an April 2005 poll showed that more than 60% of Massachusetts voters support protecting civil marriage equality.

"Over the past year, thousands of loving, tax-paying, law-abiding couples in Massachusetts have embraced the lifelong responsibilities that come with marriage. This latest attempt by the far right to destroy marriage in Massachusetts is the last gasp of a movement whose outlandish claims about civil marriage equality are being proven wrong every day in the Bay State," said Log Cabin President Patrick Guerriero.

This latest anti-family effort is being supported by a number of radical anti-gay groups, including the Colorado-based Focus on the Family and the Washington, D.C.-based Concerned Women of America. "We are confident that the fair-minded people of Massachusetts will reject this last ditch effort to turn back the clock on basic fairness," concluded Guerriero.
