(Washington, DC) – In a visit to South Carolina on Monday, Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) attacked gay and lesbian families in Massachusetts. "If Governor Romney is truly interested in strengthening families he should begin by respecting all Massachusetts families," said Log Cabin – Massachusetts President Ken Sanchez.

According to news reports, Governor Romney said, "Today, same-sex couples are marrying under the law in Massachusetts... Some are actually having children born to them... It's not right on paper. It's not right in fact. Every child has the right to have a mother and a father." Governor Romney went on to claim, "From day one I've opposed the move for same-sex marriage and its equivalent, civil unions."

"People value politicians who stand on principle. What happened to the Mitt Romney who ran for Governor supporting employment non-discrimination, hate crimes legislation, domestic partnerships, and civil union-like benefits for gay couples? We don't need another flip-flopping politician," said Sanchez.

Governor Romney's own staff seemed to contradict the Governor's comments in South Carolina. According to news reports, Romney Spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said the Governor supports an amendment that includes legal protections for gay couples.

"Log Cabin agrees with Governor Romney that we need to strengthen American families. However, attacking law-abiding, taxpaying, gay and lesbian families from your own state, while visiting another state, does nothing to strengthen families, and in fact, weakens families," concluded Sanchez.
