Republican Mayor Susan Golding Opposes Knight Initiative

Head of Nation's Sixth-Largest City Joins Leading GOP Senate Candidate in Opposition to Anti-Gay Initiative on March Ballot

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Susan Golding (R) of San Diego has announced her strong opposition to the anti-gay Knight Initiative in California, making her the highest ranking GOP local official in the state to oppose the measure which is on the March 7 ballot.

"We applaud Mayor Golding for her courage and leadership," said Kevin Ivers, director of public affairs for Log Cabin Republicans. "She understands that gay bashing must have no place in politics, and that this initiative is unnecessary, divisive and will hurt California. She has been an excellent mayor for all the people of San Diego and has never been afraid to speak out against the politics of intolerance, no matter who was involved."

"We are very happy to have Mayor Golding on board with Congressman Campbell and Log Cabin in this important effort," said David Hanson, President of Log Cabin California. "We will continue our work with Republican officials and conservative activists who agree with us that this measure should be defeated."

Golding joins Congressman Tom Campbell (R), the leading candidate for the 2000 Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in California, in opposing the Knight Initiative, a measure supported by anti-gay organizations which seeks a vote on banning same-sex marriages in California, where such marriages are already not legally recognized by law. In 1999, Campbell was the first Member of Congress of either party to announce his opposition.
