Log Cabin Applauds House GOP Leadership and Gunderson for quick passage of AIDS funding bill

Washington, D.C.  – The United States House of Representatives today passed the Ryan White CARE Act reauthorization by unanimous voice vote. The legislation was brought to the floor on suspended calendar, which does not allow amendments from the floor be added to the bill. The decision by the House GOP leadership to utilize this move demonstrates a strong support for this legislation, which is the federal government's care and treatment program for people living with AIDS.

"By utilizing the suspended calendar, " said Richard Tafel, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, "the House GOP leadership avoided the potential for any negative anti-gay amendments. Log Cabin strongly commends this action."

"The House Republican leadership with the guidance of Congressman Steve Gunderson (R-WI) has again demonstrated their compassion for people living with AIDS," said Tafel. " Chairman Michael Bilirakis (R-FL) of the Commerce Health and Environment subcomittee, and Commerce Committee Chairman Thomas Bliley (R-VA) are to be applauded for guiding the legislation through the House in a non-controversial manner."

Log Cabin urges quick conference between the House and Senate versions of the legislation before September 30, the date the original authorization is set to expire.
