GOP Congressional Leaders Headline Log Cabin Capitol Hill Briefing

Global AIDS Policy, Tax Fairness and Combatting Bias-Related Violence on Agenda for Annual Capitol Hill Conference

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Republican leaders on key issues will headline a day of policy discussion in the nation's capital on Thursday, May 3, at the annual Washington conference of Log Cabin Republicans, running May 2 to May 5, 2001.

As the Republican-led Congress begins work on confronting the African AIDS epidemic, key leaders on the issue will headline an Log Cabin Republicans Congressional Briefing to discuss their views on this important issue on Log Cabin Republicans' agenda – Senator Bill Frist (R-TN), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs; Congressman Henry Hyde (R-IL), chairman of the House International Relations Committee; and Congressman Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee on Foreign Operations, and founding member of the Log Cabin Republicans National Advisory Board.

The chief Republican sponsor of the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act in the Senate, Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), will address bias-related crimes and how his legislation addresses them. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will also discuss his work to combat bias-related crimes.

In addition to these issues, Log Cabin Republicans leaders will lobby in support of repealing the anti-gay death tax in visits to House and Senate Republican offices. Attendees will also hear presentations from Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-TX), Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL), freshman Congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL), Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL), and founding Log Cabin Republicans National Advisory Board members Congressman Jim Greenwood (R-PA) and Congresswoman Connie Morella (R-MD).

The 2001 Log Cabin Republicans Washington Weekend is the seventh annual meeting of the Log Cabin Republicans Board of Directors, the Log Cabin Republicans Trustees and Lincoln Club contributors in the nation's capital. Meetings and events, including the policy day on Capitol Hill, run from May 2 to May 5.

Log Cabin Republicans is the nation's largest gay Republican organization, with state and local chapters nationwide, a federal political action committee, a full-time Washington office, and field offices in Boston and Dallas.
