Candidate's Comments are Out of Touch with Mainstream America

(Washington, DC)  – "Gov. Mike Huckabee is establishing an unfortunate pattern on the campaign trail  – making statements about gays and lesbians that demonstrate he's out of touch with the vast majority of Americans," said Log Cabin Republicans President Patrick Sammon.

"Voters should take a close look at the Governor's pattern of ill-informed and extreme statements. Gov. Huckabee should remember it's 2008, not 1968, and he's running for president, not preacher."

In an interview this week with the religious website beliefnet.com, Huckabee said "I think the radical view is to say that we're going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal. Again, once we change the definition, the door is open to change it again."

"People of good conscience can disagree about marriage equality, but Americans deserve an honest discussion rather than false hysteria about bestiality, pedophilia, and polygamy," said Sammon.

On the campaign trail this week, Huckabee referred to his support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage by saying, "... I believe it's a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that's what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."

Last month, comments surfaced that Huckabee made in 1992 calling for AIDS patients to be isolated from the general public. The comments, which Huckabee refused to repudiate, were completely inconsistent with public health standards from that time.
